Enjoy Florida fall with two festivals in Poinciana next weekend. It’s possible to do both and keep it local on Saturday.
Poinciana High School will celebrate the season with a fall festival Saturday at the school. All proceeds raised will go to the school’s clubs and activities.
The fun begins with a 5k run at 8 a.m. ($20) followed by a kids fun run at 9 a.m. ($5). After the runs, the festival kicks off at 9:30 a.m. and includes carnival activities, hayrides, a batting cage, 3-on-3 basketball, homerun derby, a parade of floats and concession stands. The day concludes with a drama club presentation. The festival ends at 6 p.m.
Sponsors interested in a table may rent one for $50, clubs and sports, $25. For more information, contact Lance Seeright at 407-870-4860.
The eighth annual fall festival at Solivita will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to the public and free, the festival will be around the area of Village Drive in Solivita.
A vast array of handmade arts and crafts that will be available include holiday decorations, floral arrangements, jewelry, paintings, home décor, greeting cards, ceramics, ladies handbags, quilts, quilted jackets, stained glass, photography, horticulture, cookbooks and wood products. Approximately 110 vendors will be at the festival.
In addition to holiday shopping, fair-goers will have the opportunity to hear readings and have books signed by local Solivita writers. There also will be two entertainment venues with live music and dancing. Balloons and face-painting will keep the younger set busy while food and drink for purchase will keep everyone happy.
Keep Saturday local and enjoy all the festivals!

U.S. Baseball Academy, the nation’s largest baseball instructional program, will offer a six-week training session at Poinciana High School. The sessions will begin in the spring of 2010. This is advance training in hitting, pitching and catching given by top area coaches. There is a 5:1 ratio of instructor to athlete as well as batting cages.
Space is limited and cost is $99 for children in grades 1 through 12. You can register now and pay later. For more information, call 866-622-4487.

The countdown to Poinciana’s annual Christmas parade Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. has begun and this year’s parade promises to be bigger and better than ever.
Due to demand by community residents and parade participants, this year’s festivities will be on Cypress Parkway. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. (parade participants are asked to line up at 10 a.m.) from Country Club Road, then goes north on Cypress Parkway, then turns by the light on Cypress Parkway south to Burger King, ending at Regions Bank.
If you are interested in entering a float or walking as a group in the parade, call 863-427-0900 or stop by the Association of Poinciana Villages office, 401 Walnut St., no later than Wednesday, Nov. 25.

In last week’s column, I mentioned that the Poinciana Veteran’s Club had formed and would be on a float at the local parades. They were invited to participate by the Veterans Tribute and Museum, which sponsored, created and won first place in Saturday’s Veterans Day Parade in Kissimmee.
