Send e-mail in care of the News-Gazette to: news@osceolanews gazette.com. Poinciana By Lisa D’Cato As you are making your list and checking it twice, consider contributing to one of Poinciana’s earliest and most endearing community services, Santa’s Helping Hands.
The purpose of Santa’s Helping Hands is to make sure every Poinciana child has presents to open this holiday season. Last year, the group was able to see that six families, who ordinarily would not be able to have had a Christmas dinner, had a Christmas dinner. Twenty-one children also received bags full of gifts. Economically, this year is just as bad, if not worse, for many Poinciana families. Without help, this could be a bleak season. To add to this, the community appears divided over the incorporation issue. Let’s show unity by contributing to this project and show we can come together for the sake of those less fortunate. Part of the appeal of Santa’s Helping Hands is that all donations stay local, in the community of Poinciana. Drop-off boxes will be set up in local stores. Donations of non-perishable foods, new unwrapped toys and other gifts for children as well as gift cards are needed. If you would like to contribute directly, call Bob Tremblay at 407-729-3177 or e-mail Santashelpinghands @msn.com. ooo AARP Chapter 3520 will hold its traditional group Thanksgiving luncheon today. The feast begins at noon in the Poinciana Community Center, 395 Marigold Ave. Members are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Please be sure to bring your own eating utensils. This group meets the third Thursday of each month at the Poinciana Community Center. ooo The deadline for registering a float or walking group for the Poinciana 2009 Christmas Parade is quickly approaching. All participants must be registered by Wednesday, Nov. 25. This parade will have a new route. In past years, parade participants and viewers complained about the route, having felt that there were lots of vacant spaces and not enough continuing momentum. To make it bigger and better, the parade route will flow through Cypress Parkway, the main route into and out of Poinciana. While that will definitely make for a spectacular parade, it could potentially become a traffic nightmare if not well planned. The Poinciana Christmas Parade will be Saturday, Dec. 12. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. from Country Club Road (parade participants must line up at 10 a.m.). The parade route will be Cypress Parkway, north then south, ending at Regions Bank. To register for participation in the parade, call 863-427-0900 or stop by the Association of Poinciana Villages’ office, 401 Walnut St., by Nov. 25. Residents who need that extra holiday lift should line up Cypress Parkway and enjoy this holiday parade. Keep in mind, Cypress Parkway will be closed starting at 10 a.m., so plan your day around the Poinciana Christmas Parade! ooo If you have any Poinciana news or information that you would like to share, call Lisa D’Cato at 407-846-7122, e-mail
