We agree with most of the issues on the Osceola County Commission’s legislative priority list.
Kissimmee Gateway Airport certainly can be a source of economic development both for the city of Kissimmee and county and infrastructure improvements at the facility and around it can help create higher-paying jobs. Also, Hoagland Boulevard improvements certainly are integral to that job creation. While a county expressway authority could help build a new road in and out of Poinciana, it would be another bureaucracy that would have to be monitored to make sure it truly serves the public. We also would support a $2 surcharge on car rentals as dedicated funding for SunRail if county residents are exempted when the rental is due to a vehicle being incapacitated because of needed repairs or an accident. Also, we could not support a surcharge until legislators separate the freight component in the SunRail deal from the commuter rail component because the proposal is too favorable to the CSX Corp. Also, taxpayers should not have to bear all the liability for accidents. In addition, state and federal officials should not make our receiving federal stimulus money for high-speed rail in Florida contingent on our Legislature approving SunRail. We also support funding for additional hydrilla control and funding for a Primary Care Access Network to help the homeless and uninsured. However, we do not support extending from one year to 18 months the time that state criminals can be housed in county jails without reimbursement of costs. Also, we do not support the move to eliminate the requirement for local government to run legal notices in print media. The reasons are many, not just for self-preservation: • Internet notice is helpful, but not as effective as print. Also, Internet access to these notices is already available through the Florida Press Association at www.floridapublicnotices.com. • Many people cannot afford computers and monthly Internet access. • Government posting government notices on government Web sites invites abuse by government. • A notice in print is a verifiable paper trail and most of the costs for printed legal notices are paid by third parties. |
