By Peter Covino Entertainment Editor Go ahead and finish that leftover turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie, but the holiday weekend isn’t over yet. Light Up UCF has returned to the campus of the University of Central Florida and the daily event features free stuff to do for the whole family through Jan. 8.
The centerpiece of the event is the Holiday Light Show, a synchronized show at the University of Central Florida Arena, featuring 75,000 lights pulsing to holiday music. The light show begins each night at 7 p.m. with additional shows at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Also, free tonight is an outside screening of A Muppet Christmas Carol. Future screenings include the holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life (Dec. 4); Eight Crazy Nights (Dec. 11); The Santa Clause 2 (Dec. 12); A Christmas Story (Dec. 18); The Polar Express (Dec. 19); How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Dec. 22); The Santa Claus 3 (Dec. 27); Christmas with the Kranks (Dec. 29) and Scrooged (Jan. 2). All films are screened at 7 and 9:30 p.m. on a two-story outdoor screen with surround sound and comfy furniture. You also can bring your own blanket or chairs. You can also try your skill on the ice with daily ice skating. Unlimited ice skating is $12. There is a DJ spinning classic holiday songs as well as top 40 hits. The rink is the largest outdoor skating rink in Central Florida. There also is an ice slide (unlimited rides $6.50); a Ferris wheel ($4.25) and Kris Kringle’s Carousel ($4.25). Combo tickets are available that include unlimited rides and ice skating for $22 and season passes for skating can be bought for $75 or $240 for a family of four. Group rates are available including a corporate party package with catered food, drinks and private function space starting at $38. For information on group activities, call Stan Macko at 407-823-6062. Also each Monday is Metro PCS Mondays with a $2 discount for ice skating. Stop by area Metro PCS locations for more information. No holiday event is complete without a visit to Santa. Santa’s Workshop features a visit to Santa. You also can have a photo taken with Santa ($10) and decorate your own baked sugar cookie in Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen ($3.50). A photo and cookie package is available for $12. The UCF Arena will host holiday concerts during the season including Sandi Patty’s Yuletide Celebration (Dec. 12) and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Radio City Rockettes (Dec. 26-28). The Radio City Christmas Spectacular has endured since 1933, attracting more than two million patrons each year. The show includes traditional fan-favorites like “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” which continues to set the standard as the signature Rockette number for precision performance, and “the Living Nativity.” The production is en-hanced by an large LED screen that transports the audience from a wintry landscape to Times Square to Santa’s Workshop.
