The city of St. Cloud from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, will hold a grand opening at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Facility at 5701 Michigan Ave., near the Royal St. Cloud Golf Links. As part of the event, the city will offer four tours and provide snow cones, popcorn, fortunetelling and games. There also will be a dunk tank, with three throws for $1. Donations will be accepted for the event, with proceeds going to the St. Cloud Community Pantry.
There also will be hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies and sodas offered.
The city broke ground for the treatment facility on March 1, 2007, and the expansion of the Southside facility allowed for the decommissioning of the Lakeshore Treatment Facility.
The $18 million project included building new administrative facilities for the city’s Wastewater Treatment Division, implementing new process treatment equipment and providing upgrades to the existing components.
City officials stated the new facility would improve the wastewater treatment process within the city and expand operations from 1.6 million gallons per day to 6 million, with future capabilities projected at more than 9 million gallons per day.
While the city will maintain offices and some yard operations at the its Lakeshore site, virtually all of the treatment tanks and buildings on the eastern half of the property will be demolished, which will allow for the continued beautification of the lakefront, city officials stated.
