After mediocre hits such as G.I. Joe and Transformers 2, it becomes too easy, I guess, to latch onto a science fiction film that actually has something to say besides “Look, we spent more money on CGI effects than the last science fiction film.”

It had only been a few days since I saw Taking Woodstock and still was feeling a bit wistful that I couldn't be a part of what has been deemed the greatest musical gathering ever to grace the planet when a friend confided he was in upstate New York that very weekend, 40 years ago, and though the huge hippy gathering was probably less than a mile way, he couldn't be bothered to go.
Janis Joplin, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) and he didn't go.

By the time August rolls around in the summer movie season, there are usually few surprises left.
Most of the films that come out late in the schedule are released by the studios without too much expectation by the studios or film critics.
So The Perfect Getaway comes along this month as somewhat of a surprise.

Adam Sandler, with some help from Seth Rogen, deals with death
It is easy to praise Funny People a little too much.
Just put “terminal disease” in a screenplay, and Hollywood-types will fall all over themselves to get a film into production as they collectively smile and think Oscar. |
